Exploring Ethical Challenges in Participatory Research at Connect.Collaborate.Create in Paris

In October 2023, IANUS project members Reda Cimmperman (Research Council of Lithuania), Julija Baniukevič (Research Council of Lithuania), and Simone Driessen (Erasmus University Rotterdam) contributed to Connect.Collaborate.Create at Campus Condorcet in Paris. This event, the joint final conference of the PRO-Ethics and COESO projects, invited researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to discuss ‘participatory research’, particularly from an ethical perspective.

The IANUS team, with the support of Charlotte Bruns (EUR), led a workshop on ‘Responsive Ethics and Participation – Current and Future Challenges’. In collaboration with the participants, they explored trust in science together with representatives from the PRO-Ethics project, Bernard Reber and Kalli Gioannelos. In the workshop, the team particularly focused on future ethical challenges in research, including the role of AI.

By examining scenarios like AI bots in co-creation sessions or AI-assisted participation diaries, they invited participants to reflect on the evolving landscape of technology and how this might impact trust in science. The interactive session sparked critical conversations and yielded interesting insights into fostering ethical collaborations and research practices
