IANUS partner Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participates at iMEdD International Journalism Forum 2023

Our partner Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – Data and Web Science Lab participated in the iMEdD International Journalism Forum that was hosted by iMEdD – Incubator for Media Education and Development during 28-30 September in Athens, Greece.

Among others, the forum placed an emphasis on transparent and independent journalism, as well as on the prominent challenges that exist and often hinder public trust towards media news. Media freedom in an era of fake news was similarly discussed during the forum sessions, and emphasis was on the prominent use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the newsrooms and various projects.

The AUTh team further participated in the panel discussion “Towards hybrid intelligence: AI-powered analysis of Greek political rhetoric”. This panel explored an innovative approach that blends human expertise with artificial intelligence to scrutinize political discourse during election campaigns and overall report new insights. The pros and cons of using AI and tools like ChatGPT were discussed with the audience. The panelists also reported the challenges encountered during the analysis process, the limitations of using AI, but also how their initial skepticism towards the accuracy of AI-powered analysis gradually decreased when realising that human-in-the-loop approaches could address any misconceptions of the AI analysis.
